Center for Screen-Time Awareness (CSTA), formerly TV-Turnoff Network and in an early incarnation TV-Free America, is an international nonprofit organization, providing tools for people to live healthier lives in functional families and vibrant communities by taking control of the electronic media in their lives and not allowing it to control them.
Founded in 1994 by Henry Labalme and Matt Pawa as an environmental organization, CSTA has grown into an agency dealing with diverse issues including obesity, illiteracy, violence and the impact electronic media has on our lives. The organization is dedicated to making information available and putting you in charge of the “electronic tools” so you can use them in ways that enhance your quality of life.
CSTA has helped millions of people do just that. Our primary programs, Universal Screen-Time Reduction; A lifestyle for the 21st Century and Turnoff Week (formerly TV-Turnoff Week) are keys to the organization’s success. These programs put the power in your hands so you can protect your family, helping you make the best decision possible, with the best information available.
Turnoff Week is a grassroots project that works. More than 100 organizations, including the American Medical Association, the National Education Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, support or endorse Turnoff Week. Turnoff Week succeeds because our network of thousands work hard to organize families, businesses, local schools, clubs, religious congregations, and communities. Since 1994, more than 50 million people have participated in Turnoff Week.
The Center for SCREEN-TIME Awareness works to raise public awareness on the impact of excessive “screen-time.” By working with the media, distributing fact sheets, and communicating directly with the public CSTA continues to shift the debate from concerns about content toward an understanding that time away from screens leads to healthier bodies and minds. For most of us “doing” will always be more rewarding than “viewing".
With a small staff, CSTA garners the lion's share of its funding from memberships, individual donations, and sales of products. Though small, the organization is making a big difference in the world around us.
