Screens A-Z

As you know, there are few places we can go that are screen-free.  There are screens at airports, bars, dentist offices, gyms, restaurants, salons and zoos!  Often times they are distracting and sometimes quite annoying.

Currently we are doing a survey of the screens in our lives from A-Z, finding out where they are, what impact they have and what we can do about them.  It is true that some screens can be useful and informative as is the case in many museums, where they are in a separate room and tell part of the story of what you are experiencing.  But, all too often they are there to make noise and they take us away from the people we want to be with.

Our first project is taking a look at airports.  In many terminals there are TV monitors always on and always on the same channel.  Many airports get the monitors for free and receive a fee for having them there.  This is additional income to the airport.

It is important to note that airports can be very stressful locations, there is the pressure of security, listening to announcements, watching your possessions and nothing is a stressful as waiting and waiting.

The television monitors in these places often face out, so the most people can be exposed to them.  These monitors are all on 24 hour news stations, telling us about the horrors going on around us...adding more stress.  Additionally, children are being exposed to the sounds and images of the screens, more stress.

There should be a way for the airports to continue this program without negatively affecting their passengers and we hope to work with them to make certain areas screen-free zones, so those of us who want quite and calm can find that, even at the airport.
