“The Color Pets”
A National Hunt for Creativity April 27, 2008
A National Hunt for Creativity is a scavenger hunt for elementary school aged children, their families and friends. It is a way to rediscover your community, neighborhood and backyard as we encourage people to be more active in real space in real time.
The Hunt is based on the children’s book “The Color Pets” and comes with a kit so you can have more fun playing. In the book, a number of dogs find special crystals of different colors; our teams are made up of these various colors. For success, all the crystals have to be returned and put together, that is our goal as well.
Each kit has the following items:
1 Color Pets Book
10 Colored clue cards (partially filled out)
10 Stickers (one for each participating child)
10 Pencils (one for each participating child)
1 Colored "crystal" that matches your cards
Kit Pricing *
1 - 9 Kits $25 per Kit
10 - 49 Kits $20 per Kit
50 or more Kits $17.50 per Kit
RULES:
Each participating group should have no less than 5 children. Children should be between the ages of 4 and 10. Each group must have at least 1 adult per every 5 children; groups should not exceed 10 children. If there are more than 10 a second group should be formed.
ONLY children can solve the clues, and each child should read and lead the search for at least one of the clues. There are 10 clues in each kit, we suggest you (the organizer) select only five, making for six stops (not including the starting point) and allowing every child, or pair of children, to have a chance to read and lead the solving of a clue.
Each clue card comes with a rhyme based on the book, but the organizer must fill out the rest of the card, so that it corresponds with the location where the next clue is to be found. All clues should be visible and at the height a child can find it.
Clues should be located at important community sites, stores, organizations that add value to YOUR community. Make these business leaders, nonprofit organizations and others a partner in the HUNT and let them explain a little about what they do, when the group of children arrives, at their location, giving the children a chance to learn about all the things going on in the neighborhood.
To Start:
All the groups should gather at a central location (ideally the same place you will finish). This can be the store, office, facility of the sponsor organization (a school, religious organization, community group, local business, etc.). Here each child will be given a sticker and the group leader will be given the first colored clue card (all your future clue cards will be that same color) and a map (to be made by the sponsor organization) if needed. The individual groups will gather around their adult leaders, the adult will give the card to child #1 to read the card and the HUNT is on!
The Finish:
The first group to find their crystal and return it to the finish line is the winner. The sponsor presents a pencil to all the children when they return to “home base,” and presents a prize of their choice to the winning team members.
Center for SCREEN-TIME Awareness can make the following items available for prizes, Frisbees, water bottles, scout patches, t-shirts and a selection of children’s books. For prices on prizes please contact us at 202-333-9220.
